Adding an extra character or keyword string to a search form

Postby admin » Mon Mar 20, 2017 10:15 pm

Recently we needed to figure out a way to create a search form for a member directory which is popular. The problem was that the search meta keyword would not be sent correctly if the string "um_search=1" was included at the end. Another condition to this search form was that it had to be as a pull-down menu style and submit button:

The solution was this code:

This code is hidden:

This next one is good as your regular search function with text field and search button style:
Insert this before </head>.

Code: Select all
<script type="text/javascript">
document.getElementsByClassName("submitform")[0].addEventListener("click",function(){
   document.getElementsByClassName("input")[0].value+="*";
});</script>

This in the html body:
Code: Select all
<form action="index.php" method="get" style="margin:0" accept-charset="UTF-8" enctype="application/x-www-form-urlencoded">
    <input class="input" name="s" type="text" value="" />
    <input type="hidden" name="-1" value="0" />
    <input type="hidden" name="strict" value="1" />
    <input type="hidden" name="a" value="srch" />
    <input type="submit" class="submitform" class="submitform" value="Search" />
</form>

Assuming one doesn't want to use java script, one could ad the missing string in jquery into PHP code:
Code: Select all
<?php

if(isset($_GET["s"]) && $_GET["s"] != "")
{
  $query = $_GET["s"] . "um_search=1"";
}
?>
